"Frida, Mi Vida" at Artists & Makers Studios

“Frida, Mi Vida” an exhibit by David Amoroso representing the many faces of Frida Kahlo is on display January 5th -24th at Artists & Makers Studios in Rockville, MD. The studios hold several galleries that include similar themes by artists Marily Mojica and the husband/wife team of Sergio and Claudia Olivos.

Amoroso’s exhibit features 19 new paintings based on a few studio portraits of the Mexican artist who was ahead of her time as a woman and in her political involvement.

“While many artists were doing self-portraits to make them look better, hers were harsh and often exaggerated depictions of herself to reflect her life,” Amoroso said. “I painted “Frida, Mi Vida” as homage to Kahlo’s technique of including native plants, flowers and animals in the backgrounds of her portraits. This is also my favorite piece and why I decided to name the exhibit the same.”

According to Amoroso, Kahlo’s self-portraits are surprisingly relevant in today’s selfie-obsessed world. When asked what he thought she would think about being the subject of several artists’ exhibit’s he said, “I think she would appreciate the attention lavished upon her and the obsessive nature of her fans. On the other hand, it’s hard to know whether she would think that we have captured her pain accurately.”

A reception for “Frida, Mi Vida” will be held on Friday, January 5th from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Artists & Makers Studios, 11810 Parklawn Drive, Suite 210, Rockville, MD 20852; 240-437-9573.
